Do you remember being in high school and being asked “what are you going to do for a living”. I do, and the answer was “I don’t know”.
I had the opportunity to be a Career Mentor at the Junior Achievement – World of Choices event yesterday. What an amazing event! This event brought together local female students in grade 10 and 11 and gave them the opportunity to explore career options, receive mentorship and be inspired by established female professionals in the community. The event was put on by Junior Achievement, an international not-for-profit organization, which has done an excellent job helping our youth succeed in our always changing, fast paced, business environment.
Having the opportunity to meet with these young women, seeing their passion to learn and seeing them so excited to begin the path to their careers was enlightening, encouraging and truly inspiring for me. It wasn’t that long ago that I was in their position and very much unsure of what I wanted to do. An event like this would have provided me with clarity and even opened doors to careers that I did not even know were an option or of interest to me. When I was in school I didn’t think I had many career choices available to me. Little did I know there was a world of choices available to me and people ready to help me within my own community.
Thank you to Junior Achievement for allowing me to participate alongside many other successful women from professional careers in helping to mentor these talented young women. Visit http://south-western-ontario.jacan.org/ for more information.
